Cherie Lou Butler

July 11, 1941 – Aug. 27, 2026

Tribal Elder Cherie Lucille Butler (Petite) took her journey home on Aug. 27, 2026, at the age of 85 in Grand Ronde.

She was born on July 11,1941, in McMinnville, to Rebecca (Brandon) and James Petite.

Cherie enjoyed a varied career in food service, working at Nanich Youth Treatment Center, the Boys & Girls Club Bingo (now B&G Bingo) and Chemawa Indian School, all in Salem. She was active within the Tribal community of Grand Ronde, volunteering at the food bank, serving on the Elder Committee and volunteering at Tribal elections. Cherie loved to help and volunteer wherever she could and the community lost a true steward when she left us.

She was loved by everyone who met her and cared for her in her final years. She had a passion for red lipstick and red nail polish. She also loved Elvis’ music, insisting on dancing her way through life. Cherie was known for her love of board and card games, especially bingo, canasta and dominoes. Cherie had a true love for baking pies and bread, and her favorite hobby of shopping.

Cherie was preceded in death by both parents and two siblings, Patricia Sears (Petite) and Lesley Reynolds. She is survived by her two daughters, LaDonna Stepp (Butler) and Jennifer Butler; one sister, Irma Hernandez; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life was held Wednesday, Sept. 2, in the Tribal gym, with a meal at the Elders Activity Center afterward.

A private graveside service was held Thursday, Sept. 3, for family.

West Valley Funeral Home in Sheridan assisted the family.

Tribal Elder Sheila Jo Keene passed away Aug. 5, 2026, at the age of 56.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at the Tribal Cemetery, with a meal to follow at the Tribal Community Center.
