Russell “Red Fox” Sherman Gilbert

May 30, 1961 – May 9, 2019

Russell Sherman Gilbert was born on May 30, 1961, in Cottage Grove, Ore., to Grand Ronde Tribal member Martina and Russell A. Gilbert. He grew up in Cottage Grove, Creswell and Coos Bay, where he also attended school.

He had two brothers, Joseph Gilbert and Willie Gilbert, and two sisters, Midge Gilbert and Chiquita Gilbert.

Russell had five children -- Deidra Alexander-Bybee, Kayla Burcham, Makayla Gilbert, Samantha Gilbert and Shayanne Gilbert -- and eight grandchildren.

Russell loved to fish and hunt, and was currently living in Crescent where he loved to fish in Crescent Lake. He also liked to make Indian jewelry and dreamcatchers, and was an accomplished artist.

Russell “Red Fox” Gilbert walked on May 9, 2019, near Crescent.

Viewing and visitation will be at the West Valley Funeral Home in Sheridan, Ore., from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 17. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the Grand Ronde Tribal gym, 9615 Grand Ronde Road. He will be interred at the Curl Family Cemetery in Otis, Ore.
