HUD announces Indian Housing Block Grant awards
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has announced that it is distributing more than $1.1 billion in Indian Housing Block Grants to Tribes and Tribally-designated housing entities, for affordable housing in Indian Country.
Grand Ronde’s allocation for 2025 was $6.2 million.
Tribes apply for grants using a federal formula that considers population, income, housing conditions and need. It is the main source of federal housing support to Tribes and is driven by treaties with the federal government. Grant funds can be used for housing construction, operation, improving existing houses and providing housing services.
Other Oregon Tribes received the following allocations for 2025:
- Burns Paiute Tribe, $315,233
- Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, $8,677,436
- Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians, $1,873,430
- Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, $2,912,747
- Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation, $2,645,992
- Coquille Indian Tribe, $2,162,442
- Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe, $2,354,710
- Klamath Tribes, $3,129,909
“Today’s announcement reaffirms our commitment to serve Tribal communities while working towards meeting Indian Country’s housing needs,” HUD Secretary Scott Turner said in a press release. “HUD has a strong partnership with Tribal nations, and I look forward to collaborating directly with Tribal leaders to expand housing opportunities and remove burdensome regulatory barriers that impede progress.”
