Gerard “Gery” Croy Bolden

Jan. 8, 1949 – Nov. 23. 2025

Tribal Elder Gerald “Gery” Croy Bolden, 76, of Portland, Oregon, passed on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2025, with his children by his side.

Born in Portland, Gery was an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. He was a brilliant young man with smarts that turned into wisdom as he mellowed with age. He had a deep sense of curiosity, always seeking new experiences and found joy in sharing new foods, places and hobbies with the people he loved.

Gery proudly served his country as a United States Marine and Vietnam veteran. Following his military service, he earned his degree from the University of Portland and went on to spend nearly 30 years with Bonneville Power Administration.

Like his father, Jim Bolden, who passed before him, Gery was passionate about being outdoors. His younger years were spent camping all over Oregon, his later years kept him closer to home but he could often be found picking huckleberries, fishing, crabbing, clamming or just walking along the beach.

Gery’s family and friends will remember him for his boundless curiosity, quick wit, generosity of spirit and his deep love for the people he cared about.

He is survived by his children, Joylyn (Skip) Ankeney and Toby (Georgia) Bolden; grandchildren, George, Ben, Kiera, Maggie and Gabe; mother, June Bolden; girlfriend, Jessie Cousins; sister and brother, Daphne (John Houle) Turner and Del (Kim) Bolden; the cousins he loved like brothers, along with countless friends who became family.

A memorial celebration for Gery’s friends and family will be held at the Sherwood Elks Lodge from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27. Attendees are asked to RSVP to Toby and Joylyn at AnkeneyRSVP@gmail.com or via text to 503-970-4918.

We ask that you wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt.

Gery will also be interred at Willamette National Cemetery in a private ceremony for family Monday, Dec. 29.
